Landesgraduiertenstipendium

The Free State of Saxony awards scholarships for doctoral studies within the framework of a graduate program.


Funding of Doctoral Projects

The Free State of Saxony provides funding for doctoral projects as part of a graduate program:


  • Maximum funding period: three years, extendable by up to one year in justified cases
  • Funding amount: scholarship holders receive a monthly basic scholarship of 1,500 euros and, if applicable, a monthly family allowance of 100 euros per child
  • Admission requirement: Eligible to apply are (prospective) doctoral students from all faculties of the University of Leipzig with an above-average degree from a qualifying university program.
  • Admission procedure: The Graduate Commission decides on the applications, taking into account a statement from the faculties.
  • Decision criteria: Qualification of the applicant, quality of the doctoral project, adherence to the standard study period
  • Exclusion criteria for scholarship awarding: The doctoral project is already being funded with public funds in another way. If the scholarship is received, it is permissible to work in a paid part-time job (with proof) with an average of up to 8 hours per week.

Application Procedure for Landesstipendien 2025

The University of Leipzig awards Landesstipendien for doctoral students for the winter semester 2025/2026.


  • Application deadline: Monday, September 8, 2025
  • Procedure:
    • Please submit the application documents
      • by September 8, 2025 at the latest
      • in digital form, preferably as a single PDF file
      • by email to: stipendien[at]uni-leipzig.de
    • Special feature: The application form from the Studentenwerk Freiberg must also be submitted to the University of Leipzig and will be forwarded if necessary.
    • Applications received later or incomplete applications cannot be considered.

Documents to be Submitted

  • Application for admission to the graduate program at the University of Leipzig
  • Application for a Landesstipendium from the funds of the Free State of Saxony
  • Tabular curriculum vitae/report on previous scientific training
  • One expert opinion from the supervising university teacher
  • Description of the doctoral project (max. 10 pages)
  • Time and work plan for the entire required doctoral period
  • Certificate(s) of university degree
    • mandatory: degree certificate that qualifies for doctorate (FR Medicine: also attach result notification about the medical pre-examination/FR Veterinary Medicine: attach license to practice medicine)
  • References can be attached.
  • In the event of approval of a Landesgraduiertenstipendium, proof of acceptance as a doctoral student at the faculty or a certificate of enrollment for the doctoral program must be submitted no later than the start of funding.

Notification of the Award Decision

You will be informed by the responsible Studentenwerk in Freiberg about the decision regarding the award of the scholarship.
