Clinical Coding Auditing Course

The Clinical Coding Auditing course is designed to provide knowledge and develop skills in the auditing of coded data and analysing and reporting on audit outcomes, using the ICD-10-AM 13th edition. This course is the only one of its kind in the world and is intended for experienced professionals in Australia and New Zealand familiar with ICD-10-AM 13th edition.

It will enhance skills in auditing coded data, using contemporary audit tools, analysing and providing effective feedback, reporting on audit outcomes, and developing organisational recommendations.


Course Content

You will learn practical knowledge and skills for managing, evaluating, and auditing clinical, administrative, and funding-related health data. The course modules include:


  • Module 1: Principles of case-mix and Activity Based Funding Models
  • Module 2: Theory and Principles of Auditing
  • Module 3: Statistical Analysis, Methodology, and use of Contemporary Audit Tools
  • Module 4: Audit Outcomes: Reporting and Strategic Development

Your Study Experience

This course contains four two-week long modules, with a time commitment of 6-8 hours per module, including knowledge checks and optional drop-in sessions, facilitated by experts in this field. The overall expected time commitment for this course is 110 hours over a period of 15 weeks.


Assessment

You will use your newly developed auditing skills in conducting an audit of between 60-100 medical records and writing a management report, as well as taking an exam and a health classification benchmarking test. Depending on your level of achievement, you will receive one of the following certificates upon successful completion of the assessments:


  • Option 1: Certificate of External and Internal Clinical Coding Auditing
    • Health Classification Test: achieve a score of 85% or more
    • Audit Report and Examination: achieve a score of 80% or more
  • Option 2: Certificate of Internal Clinical Coding Auditing
    • Health Classification Test: achieve a score of 75% or more
    • Audit Report and Examination: achieve a score of 65% or more
  • Option 3: Certificate of Participation Clinical Coding Auditing course
    • If the benchmarks for Option 1 or 2 are not met

Eligibility

To be eligible for this course, you will need to be currently working at a Health Information Service or have access to medical records, and have either:


  • A qualification (Bachelor or Master) in Health Information Management from a HIMAA-accredited tertiary course
  • HIMAA Certificate IV or Diploma in Clinical Classification graduates or equivalent
  • Certificate IV or Diploma in Clinical Classification from an approved RTO (VET) Clinical Coding course You will also have:
  • A minimum of three years' experience coding in a tertiary hospital, complex case-mix
  • Five years' experience coding at other non-tertiary hospitals, with less complex case-mix
  • Professional reference from your current manager (e.g., HIS Manager)
