It provides a comprehensive exploration of eight distinct fields of study, including Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Systems & Computing, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering.
Fields of Study
The M.Eng. program offers eight fields of study, each with its own unique research areas and career paths. These fields include:
- Biological Engineering: applies principles of biology and engineering to develop innovative solutions for complex biological and environmental challenges.
- Biomedical Engineering: fuses engineering design and problem-solving to improve human health, with research areas including medical imaging, image analysis, and biomechanics.
- Computer Engineering: focuses on the design and implementation of computer devices and systems, with research areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital systems design.
- Engineering Systems & Computing: involves the design and implementation of computer devices and systems, with research areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, and high-performance computing.
- Environmental Engineering: involves methods to prevent or mitigate damage to the environment, with research areas including water quality control, wastewater treatment, and soil remediation.
- Mechanical Engineering: advances skills in developing processes and systems that improve the world, with research areas including sustainable energy, sustainable mobility, and materials manufacturing.
- Mechatronics Engineering: integrates electrical and mechanical engineering, robotics, and computational hardware to advance automation, robotics, and smart manufacturing.

Collaborative International Development Studies (IDS) Designation
Students in the Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Engineering fields can choose to combine their MEng with an IDS designation (MEng:L + IDEV). This designation provides an interdisciplinary framework for the study of international development, combining training in a selected academic discipline with exposure to a broad range of social science perspectives.
Degree Requirements
Students complete International Development Studies core requirements and the requirements of their home department. The IDS Master's Core requirements include:
- IDEV*6200 [1.00] Development Theory, Issues and Process
- IDEV*6300 [0.50] Research and Analysis in a Development Context Optional IDS courses include:
- IDEV*6000 [0.50] Regional Context
- IDEV*6500 [0.50] Fieldwork in International Development Studies
Program Highlights
- Delivery method: On-campus learning, with students completing 8 courses.
- Start dates: Winter, Summer, Fall.
- Length: 12 months (students may complete the program in as little as 8 months or up to 24 months).
- Program load: Part-time, Full-time.
General Admission Requirements
Applicants must hold an honours engineering degree with at least a 70% average in the past four full semesters or the last two complete undergraduate years or the equivalent. Applicants must demonstrate acceptable analytical ability by having taken a sufficient number of mathematics and physical sciences courses.
Customize Your M.Eng. Journey
The M.Eng. program allows students to customize their journey with a broad number of available courses based on their chosen field. Students complete 4.0 credits according to the following:
- 2.0 credits from a combination of Engineering Core and Professional Restricted Electives.
- 2.0 credits of study from Field Restricted Electives, specific to their field of study.

Financial Information
The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program at the University of Guelph is a self-funded program. Students may be eligible to apply for Graduate Teaching Assistantships. Tuition fees for domestic students are $9,686.94, while international students are billed on a per-credit basis at $4,467 per 0.5 credit course.
