Description
This program is designed for individuals who have a love of drawing, are fascinated by the natural world, and admire professional illustrators who bring to life flowers, tiny beetles, and other natural wonders. The program provides a sound understanding of specific methods of Natural History Illustration, with applications in fields of science, contemporary professional practice, and the representation of broader histories and theories of culture and knowledge.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, graduates will have:
- Taken an exploratory and self-directed approach to ongoing and lifelong learning across a range of relevant technical, theoretical, and practical domains of Natural History Illustration knowledge and practice.
- Demonstrated a sound and critical understanding of specific methods of Natural History Illustration with application to servicing fields of science, contemporary professional practice, and the representation of broader histories and theories of culture and knowledge.
- Been exploratory, creative, and experimental in the development of a technically competent illustration skill-base and in approach to research and problem-solving through applied fieldwork methodology and studio-based enquiry.
- Worked independently and/or collaboratively, in a professional and ethical manner, in developing conceptual and creative solutions related to the development of a Natural History Illustrative resource, scholarly outcomes, and cultural and community initiatives.
- Demonstrated a sound knowledge of fieldwork methods employed in observing, recording, and visually interpreting the natural world.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the suitability of traditional and digital illustration methods in contemporary forms of print and screen-based publication.
- A level of cultural awareness and appreciation of issues related to biodiversity and the environment.
Admission Requirements
Admission to this program is available to Australian citizens and residents only. Eligibility for admission is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme. The University accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility, including Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications, prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.
English Language Requirements
All applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement. The overall minimum English language proficiency score is 6, with a sub-test minimum of 6.
Recommended Studies
Recommended studies for this program include HSC Visual Arts, Textiles and Design, Design and Technology, Senior Science, Biology, and Geography, or equivalent.
Program Requirements
To complete the program, students must successfully complete courses totaling 240 units, comprising:
- 160 units of Core Courses
- 60 units of courses chosen from the course list, with no more than 40 units at the 1000 level and at least 10 units at the 3000 level
- 20 units of Electives courses No more than 100 units can be taken at the 1000 level, and at least 60 units of core and course list courses must be taken at the 3000 level.

Transition Arrangements
Transition arrangements are in place for students who commenced study prior to 2021. Courses completed prior to 2021 will count towards the Directed Course requirements.
