Program Overview


Course Description

The Aboriginal Professional Experience course is a core component of the Bachelor of Global Indigenous Studies program. It provides students with a professional placement in an associated workforce related to their major studies, equivalent to 210 hours. The placement is designed to maximize Aboriginal-related experiences in a cross-cultural work environment.


Course Content

The course content includes:


  • Applying theoretical frameworks to professional settings and real-life experiences
  • Understanding the role and challenges of working cross-culturally
  • Exploring the feasibility of advocacy in the workplace
  • Identifying relevant support networks within the industry of choice
  • Practicing skills, knowledges, and accruement gained in the program
  • Development of generic professional conduct and skills, including Equity and Diversity and OH&S requirements
  • Working with or servicing Aboriginal community, clients, or other minority groups
  • Exploring the politics of work
  • Understanding, maximizing, and guidance in career planning
  • Identifying career opportunities in the professional work environment
  • Honing skills in workplace communication, including preparation for competitive work environments

Enrolment Rules

This course is available to students in the following programs:


  • Bachelor of Aboriginal Professional Practice (12242, 240 units)
  • Bachelor of Global Indigenous Studies (40122, 240 units)
  • Bachelor of Global Indigenous Studies/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (40188, 400 units) Students must have successfully completed the following courses:
  • ABOR1001: Critical Indigenous Studies (10 units)
  • ABOR2001: Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship (10 units)
  • ABOR3001: Professional Practice and Entrepreneurship (10 units)

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:


  1. Experience real exposure to the professional chosen fields of students in their major subject area of choice
  2. Explore relevant knowledge and experience in genuine work-related practices in the work environment
  3. Outline the theoretical and knowledge bases of the program and adapt these to practical workplace situations
  4. Examine skills required for the workplace, including communication and teamwork
  5. Acquire a cross-cultural understanding of the political, social, and economic world of work
