Course Description
This course is a graduate-level introduction to Philosophy of Language, with a focus on 2 or 3 particular special topics, the choice of which will depend on students' interests. Possible topics include:
- Discourse about fictional entities
- Vagueness
- Context-dependence
- Apriority and analyticity The course materials will include orienting essays from a recent "Companion" volume, as well as articles made available online. Students may also read from Irene Heim and Angelika Kratzer's standard semantics textbook or David Kaplan's essay "Demonstratives".
Course Requirements
Students will produce one term essay, with an initial draft due several weeks into the course. Additionally, students will give a small number of mini-presentations that will open each class meeting.
