Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) Overview
The Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) is a 4-year honours degree that allows students to combine theory and practice as they study the biological, psychological, and social facets of human development and behaviour. This knowledge can then be applied in practicums and field placements, leading to an understanding of how to improve health and well-being at all stages of life.
Program Majors
The Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) has three majors:
- Applied Human Nutrition (AHN)
- Child Studies (CSTU)
- Family Studies and Human Development (FSHD)
Career Opportunities
With a BASc, graduates can work in a variety of jobs, such as in community-based services. In combination with post-graduate programs, it can lead to careers in:
- Teaching
- Social work
- Medicine
- Psychiatry
- Pediatrics
- Geriatrics
- Research
- Speech-language pathology
- Occupational therapy
- Physiotherapy AHN graduates may also go on to become dieticians.
Program Administration
The BASc is offered by the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition (FRAN), one of five departments in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS). The Department of Family Relations and Applied Human Nutrition has a proud history at Guelph and traces its roots back to the Macdonald Institute, one of the founding colleges of the University of Guelph.
Academic Advising
The Bachelor of Applied Science Academic Advising Office provides guidance and assistance to students with course planning, course selection, interpreting university academic policies and procedures, and facilitating connections with important resources on campus.
