Introduction to the Carleton-Mitacs Globalink Research Award

The Carleton-Mitacs Globalink Research Award is a program that funds student research mobility, providing opportunities for students to conduct research towards a thesis project or as part of a faculty-led research project. This award enables students to build international research collaborations and enrich their academic experience through short-term research visits.


Program Overview

The program is an opportunity for students to conduct research visits at or from institutions in eligible countries. There are two ways to apply: through calls for applications with Mitacs partners or through Carleton's open call for travel to/from eligible countries.


Calls for Applications with Mitacs Partners

Mitacs's international partners post calls for applications, which are listed below along with relevant information. Some calls have deadlines, while others are open all year.


  • Aix-Marseille Université:
    • Travel to Canada: full-time master's and PhD students or postdoctoral fellows
    • Travel from Canada: full-time senior undergraduate, master's and PhD students, or postdoctoral fellows
    • Disciplines: all disciplines
    • Other requirements: N/A
    • Eligible institutions: Aix-Marseille Université
    • Financial contribution: no financial contribution is required from the Canadian institution
    • Award amount: $6,000
    • Application process: submit to Mitacs through the local Mitacs Advisor
  • Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI):
    • Travel: to Canada from India and/or to India from Canada
    • Duration: 12-24 weeks
    • Intern level: full-time master's and PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows
    • Themes: all disciplines
    • Eligible institutions: a full list of eligible Indian institutions is available, and a full list of eligible Canadian universities is available
    • Award amount: $6,000
    • Co-funding: no financial contribution is required from the Canadian institution
    • Application process: submit to Mitacs through the local Mitacs representative
  • National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST):
    • Travel: from Canada to Japan
    • Duration: 12-24 weeks
    • Intern level: full-time senior undergraduate, master's, and PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows
    • Themes: all disciplines, with a focus on advanced networking and cyberinfrastructure, artificial intelligence, continuum computing, cyber-physical system, cybersecurity, human-centered mobility, human informatics and interactions, immersive visualization and analytics, or robotics
    • Eligible institutions: Artificial Intelligence Research Center, Cyber Physical Security Research Center, Digital Architecture Research Center, Human Augmentation Research Center, Human-Centered Mobility Research Center, Human Informatics and Interaction Research Institute, or Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems Research Center
    • Award amount: $3,000 + airfare and accommodations
    • Application process: submit to Mitacs through the local Mitacs representative
  • Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine:
    • Travel: from Ukraine to Canada
    • Duration: 12-24 weeks
    • Intern level: full-time senior undergraduate, master's, and PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows
    • Themes: all disciplines
    • Eligible institutions: all universities in Ukraine
    • Award amount: $6,000
    • Co-funding: no financial contribution is required from the Canadian institution
    • Application process: submit to Mitacs through the local Mitacs representative

Carleton's Open Call for Travel to/from Eligible Countries

Carleton has partnered with Mitacs to offer opportunities for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research visits at or from institutions in eligible countries. This is an open call with no deadline, but there are a limited number of awards available.


  • Eligible Countries: most countries are eligible, with a list of ineligible countries available on the Mitacs GRA webpage
  • Duration: research trips must be between 12 and 24 weeks
  • Applicant Eligibility:
    • Carleton Student Applicants: Carleton senior undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows, are invited to apply
    • Carleton Faculty Applicants: Carleton faculty members looking to build or strengthen international partnerships are encouraged to apply to host an undergraduate or graduate student, or a postdoctoral fellow from abroad on a co-supervised research project
    • International Applicants: senior undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows from an eligible country, are welcome to apply
  • Value and Payment of Award: the award provides CAD$6,000 to cover travel and accommodations or research expenses
  • How to Apply:
    1. Contact the International Projects Coordinator and/or the local Mitacs Advisor to determine if the project fits the funding requirements
    2. Complete the application and have the Mitacs advisor review it before requesting signatures
    3. Download the PDF for institutional signatures and send to the International Projects Coordinator at Carleton to finalize and return
    4. Submit the application with all approvals to Mitacs through the GRA portal for final review
    5. Once approved by Mitacs, the award recipient receives a letter of approval and must submit required paperwork
    6. Following the submission of the required paperwork, Mitacs issues a Notice of Award and releases the funds to Carleton
    7. The award recipient has one year to travel from the date of the letter of approval
