Program Overview
Introduction to Art and Architectural History
The Art and Architectural History program at Carleton University explores the built environment and its reflection of human needs, values, and ideas throughout history. Students learn to understand buildings and cities in their artistic, social, cultural, and technological contexts, studying world architecture as living environments that interact with all aspects of human experience across time.
Program Details
The program offers various courses, regular field trips, guest speakers from outside the university, and study-abroad opportunities in locations such as Istanbul, Venice, Rome, and England. The Practicum program gives students academic credit for working in organizations like Parks Canada and the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, or firms like PR-TY Architects.
Careers
The History and Theory of Architecture (HTA) program is an excellent first step toward careers in architectural practice, heritage planning and conservation, urban planning, journalism and criticism, libraries and archives, organizational roles in community centres, and public history. It fosters intellectual skills necessary for critical thinking while emphasizing the importance of ethics and community building in real life.
A Global Perspective
Students interested in transnational and transcultural art history are welcome to join the manifold activities of the Centre for Transnational Cultural Analysis (CTCA), an interdisciplinary research hub that brings together students and scholars working with transcultural and transnational approaches to studies in the humanities.
Study Abroad Opportunities
The program provides students with experiences to study abroad, including summer courses in Rome or Istanbul, or a fall semester in Venice. These opportunities allow Art & Architectural History students to step out of Ottawa and see the world.
The History and Theory of Architecture Society (HTAS)
The History and Theory of Architecture Society (HTAS) is a vibrant and welcoming community serving HTA students through inclusive social and academic events, approachable professional development activities, and networking opportunities.
