Program Overview
Graduate Diploma in Linguistics
The Graduate Diploma in Linguistics is a unique program designed for current Carleton graduate students interested in interface linguistics. It is open to both PhD and Master's students from disciplines other than linguistics and will allow them to incorporate the study of linguistics into their primary program. The program is designed primarily for students pursuing Carleton degrees in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, French, and English.
Admission Requirements
- Undergraduate or graduate coursework in linguistics or related fields
- Concurrent enrolment in a graduate program such as Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies, Anthropology, Cognitive Science, English, or French
Program Requirements
Students will establish their programs in consultation with the School's supervisor of graduate studies.

Applying to the Graduate Diploma in Linguistics
To apply for admission into the Graduate Diploma in Linguistics, students must first be enrolled in a graduate program at Carleton. The application for those programs is independent of the application for the Diploma.
Required Documents
- Transcript(s) and CV
- Letter of reference from the current graduate supervisor
- Statement of Intent, including:
- An outline of the current research project at the PhD or Masters level
- An explanation of how the research relates to linguistics
- A list of elective courses planned to be taken toward the GDip

Program Details
The program culminates with a Capstone Examination, ensuring students have acquired the same level of linguistics knowledge as graduates from the MA program.
