Program Overview

Industrial Design Programs

The School of Industrial Design offers several programs, including the Bachelor of Industrial Design, Master of Design, and Minor in Design.

Bachelor of Industrial Design

  • The Bachelor of Industrial Design program requires students to complete a minimum of 12 weeks of work experience related to design, which can be satisfied through an industrial practice internship or the cooperative option.
  • The industrial practice internship must be approved by the faculty member involved and requires students to work under supervision by an expert who can help develop their professional skills.
  • The internship must also provide students with the opportunity to analyze and articulate comparisons between their education in design and their experience working in a professional design environment.

Master of Design

  • The Master of Design program offers students the opportunity to specialize in various areas of design, including faculty research areas and student thesis/research areas.
  • The program requires students to complete a thesis or research project, which is archived in the Carleton Thesis Archive.

Minor in Design

  • The Minor in Design program is available to undergraduate students who wish to pursue a minor in design in addition to their major degree.

Co-op and Internship Options

  • The School of Industrial Design offers a co-op program that provides students with assistance in finding paid work terms with leading design-oriented manufacturers and design offices in Canada.
  • The co-op program consists of 5 work terms, including 1 work term during the summer after second year and 4 consecutive work terms between third and fourth year.
  • Students who participate in the co-op program must take a 0.5 credit course in an IDES elective in place of the Internship Field Report course.
  • The internship option is typically taken in the summer between third and fourth year and requires students to find their own work experience related to design.

Exchange Programs

  • The School of Industrial Design offers exchange programs with partner universities around the world, which provide students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different culture and gain a new perspective on design.
  • The selection process for exchange programs is competitive and requires a minimum 7.0 GPA and recommendation from the school.
  • Students who participate in exchange programs will receive a passing grade of "SAT" on their record, while failing grades will appear as "UNS" and will not be calculated in their CGPA.

Program Requirements and Electives

  • The Bachelor of Industrial Design program requires students to complete a series of core courses, as well as electives in areas such as design studios, design theory, and design technology.
  • The Master of Design program requires students to complete a series of core courses, as well as electives in areas such as design research, design theory, and design practice.

Faculty Research Areas

  • The faculty members in the School of Industrial Design have research areas that include design theory, design history, design technology, and design practice.
  • Students in the Master of Design program have the opportunity to work with faculty members on research projects and thesis topics related to these areas.

Student Resources

  • The School of Industrial Design provides students with a range of resources, including design studios, computer labs, and libraries.
  • Students also have access to career counseling, internship placement, and job search assistance.
