Program Overview
IBET Momentum Fellowship
The Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton University has proudly joined the Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology (IBET) PhD Project, which is intended to foster equitable and inclusive research environments to increase the presence of Indigenous and Black academics in STEM.
Available Funding
The IBET Momentum Fellowship provides $32,000/year for four years ($128,000 total), plus consideration for a TA position. Note that $6,000/year of the $32,000/year must be secured through the doctoral student's thesis supervisor.
Eligibility to Apply
All applicants must:
- Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Metis and Inuit) or Black (African-Canadian, Caribbean-Canadian, or Afro-Caribbean heritage).
- Meet PhD admission requirements for their program in the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
- Have already applied and are planning to start their PhD program in September 2025 or January 2026 (excludes fast-track/transfer to the PhD program from a master's program).

Eligible PhD programs are offered within the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
Selection Criteria
The selection criteria include:
- Statements on career interest, research plan, leadership and communication skills
- Research ability and potential (weight: 50%)
- Relevant experience and achievements obtained within and beyond academia (weight: 50%)
Criteria One – Research Ability and Potential
Quality of research proposal, including:
- Specific, focused, and feasible research question(s) and objective(s)
- Clear description of the proposed methodology
- Significance and expected contributions to research Relevant training, such as academic training, lived experience, and traditional teachings. Research experience and achievements relative to the applicant's stage of study, lived experience, and knowledge systems. Quality of contributions and extent to which they advance the field of research. Demonstration of sound judgment and ability to think critically. Demonstration of responsible and ethical research conduct. Enthusiasm for research, originality, initiative, autonomy, relevant community involvement, and outreach. The ability or potential to communicate theoretical, technical, and/or scientific concepts clearly and logically in written and oral formats.
Criteria Two – Relevant Experience and Achievements
Indicators of relevant experience and achievements obtained within and beyond academia, including:
- Scholarships, awards, and distinctions Academic record, including:
- Transcripts
- Duration of previous studies
- Program requirements and courses pursued
- Course load
- Relative standing in program Professional, academic, and extracurricular activities, such as:
- Teaching, mentoring, supervising, and/or coaching
- Managing projects
- Participating in science and/or research promotion
- Community outreach, volunteer work, and/or civic engagement
- Chairing committees and/or organizing conferences and meetings
- Participating in departmental or institutional organizations, associations, societies, and/or clubs

Applications for the IBET Momentum Fellowship must include:
