Program Overview

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) Course

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Carleton University is pleased to announce a short course on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) Methods for Civil Infrastructures.

Course Overview

Public service managers, specialists, consulting engineers, and business professionals involved in planning, design, construction, and management of civil infrastructure systems need an understanding of basic LCA and LCCA concepts to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure solutions. This short course will focus on fundamentals and key elements of life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) methods for civil infrastructures. The course will review life-cycle-thinking concept, LCA and LCCA methods, various efficiencies of process systems, material inventories and waste analysis, water footprint and energy footprint aspects. Furthermore, this course will review asset management components from LCCA perspective, LCCA approaches, methods, and application.

Target Audience

This course would be beneficial to all engineering and business professionals dealing with civil infrastructure planning, design, construction, and management. In particular, this course will greatly help engineers working in civil, environmental, municipal, transportation, pavement, geotechnical engineering areas and especially to those involved in planning and management of municipal streets, roads, highways, public and private buildings, recreational facilities, parks, schools, municipal waste, water treatment facilities, and mining.

Course Objectives

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • understand the role of life-cycle-thinking in sustainability
  • understand the concepts and fundamental elements needed for implementing LCA and LCCA tools in your everyday work
  • apply principles and standard frameworks for implementing LCA and appreciate challenges associated with the LCA
  • explore and apply efficiency concepts in lower-level and high-level engineering and business processes in your application areas
  • apply step-by-step methods for conducting LCCA for determining economic decisions related to infrastructure planning, design, implementation, and management

Course Instructor
