Program Overview
Introduction to the University Program
The Complexo Hospitalar e da Saúde (CHS) at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) has promoted a capacity-building course in Environmental Sustainability, focusing on themes related to environmental issues, such as climate change and extreme events, and hospital management.
Course Objectives and Structure
The course aimed to qualify healthcare professionals in relation to current environmental challenges, which significantly impact public health and quality of life. The 30-hour hybrid training was offered to postgraduate students and residents of the Programa de Residência Multiprofissional em Saúde and the Programa de Residência em Enfermagem Obstétrica at UFRJ, as well as healthcare professionals from CHS and the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde do Rio de Janeiro.
Course Content and Faculty
The course covered topics such as pollution and climate change, their impact on population health, and hospital waste management. Faculty members from various UFRJ departments taught the courses, including professors Carmen Froes, Patricia Floriano, and Javier Rodriguez. Professor Susanne Hoffmann, a member of the Coordenação SER/UFRJ, also lectured on the Plano de Logística Sustentável (PLS) and the importance of environmental literacy.
Program Impact and Participant Feedback
Participants praised the course, highlighting its relevance to their professional development and the need for environmental awareness in healthcare. João Victor Cardoso, a resident in the Programa de Residência Multiprofissional, noted that the course helped him understand the relationship between sustainability and health, while Ana Clara Ramilo, a psychology graduate, emphasized the importance of considering the impact of climate change and environmental issues on public health.
University Initiatives and Partnerships
The course is part of the Política de Sustentabilidade e Educação Regenerativa (SER) at UFRJ, which aims to integrate sustainability into the curriculum and promote environmental awareness among students and professionals. The CHS/UFRJ partnership with the Programa de Residência Multiprofissional em Saúde and the Programa de Residência em Enfermagem Obstétrica demonstrates the university's commitment to addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices in healthcare.
