Program Overview
Introduction to the University Program
The University Program in Rela踥es Internacionais (International Relations) at UFRJ is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of international relations. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to succeed in their future careers.
Program Objectives
The program has several objectives, including:
- Teaching basic, specific, and instrumental knowledge indispensable for the area of international relations
- Ensuring the analytical and synthetic processing of information and discourses related to international phenomena
- Guiding the teaching process towards research and knowledge production in the classroom and through complementary activities
- Forming professional competencies and skills in the career field, covering topics such as political science, international politics, Brazilian foreign policy, history of international relations, and more
Curriculum
The curriculum of the International Relations course at UFRJ is composed of 2,816 hours, distributed as follows:
- 1,920 hours of compulsory disciplines
- 300 hours of optional academic activities
- 180 hours of compulsory RCS (Research and Complementary Studies)
- 135 hours of complementary activities
- 281 hours of extension activities
The program is divided into two cycles of formation: the first cycle, which includes the first four periods of the course, aims to provide a common foundation for students of International Relations and Defesa e Gest緌 Estrat嶲ica Internacional (Defense and Strategic International Management). The second cycle, which includes the last four periods, focuses on reinforcing the autonomous identity of the International Relations course, with specific compulsory disciplines and optional disciplines of free choice.
Cycle Common to International Relations and Defense
The common cycle of four periods includes 20 compulsory disciplines of 60 hours each, offered by the IRID (Institute of International Relations and Defense) and partner units such as the Institute of Economics, Department of Political Science, and N𠍇leo de Pol癃icas P𠎀licas e Direitos Humanos (Center for Public Policy and Human Rights).
Specific Cycle of International Relations
The specific cycle of International Relations corresponds to the last four periods of the course and includes 12 compulsory disciplines of 60 hours each, offered by the IRID and partner units. The cycle also includes 120 hours of Work Conclusion Course (RCS), 60 hours of practical activity called "Seminars" (RCS), and 300 hours of optional disciplines for International Relations.
