Program Overview


Programa Institucional de P鏀-Doutorado (PIPD)

The PIPD is an institutional program of CAPES with the objective of:


  • Promoting the realization of excellence studies at a high level
  • Reinforcing national research groups
  • Promoting the insertion of researchers in postdoctoral stages, stimulating their integration with research projects developed by postgraduate programs in the country
  • Promoting the improvement of doctors through teaching and research
  • Promoting the internationalization of postgraduate programs, encouraging the realization of postdoctoral stages abroad

Eligibility Criteria

A scholarship in the postdoctoral modality is granted to each Postgraduate Program (PPG) evaluated by CAPES with the following characteristics:


  • Note 6 or 7 throughout the national territory
  • Note 5 located in the North region
  • Note 5 located in a municipality with a Municipal Human Development Index (IDHM) less than 0.750 in the Northeast, Midwest, South, and Southeast regions

Selection Process

Each PPG makes public the notice of registration on its website, and based on the submitted documentation, it lists the selected candidates, publishing the result in order of classification from the first place.


Scholarship Concession

The analysis for the concession of the scholarship must take into account the items of the current ordinance, as well as the items of the Term of Commitment made available by CAPES.


Program Requirements

The PIPD provides for the delivery of reports by the scholarship holder to the PPG as part of the evaluation.


Postdoctoral Stage Abroad

With the objective of better guiding the Programa Institucional de P鏀-Doutorado (PIPD) in the context of the stage abroad, the following information is provided:


  • The registration for the stage abroad will be carried out through the CAPES system.
  • The courses must send a letter signed by the coordinator, informing about the postdoctoral stage abroad, containing the full name of the scholarship holder, CPF, email, period, and institution abroad.
  • The concession of the scholarship abroad can only occur after the first year of realization of the postdoctoral stage in the country (from the 13th month of the scholarship).
  • The concession of the scholarship abroad can occur until the twentieth month of the validity of the postdoctoral scholarship in the country.
  • The postdoctoral stage scholarship abroad will have a minimum duration of 6 months and a maximum of 10 months.

Required Documents

For registration in the system, the following documents will be initially required:


  • Letter from the co-supervisor abroad: Must be issued on paper with the institution's letterhead, duly signed, containing the indication of the month and year of start and end of the stage, and confirming that the scholarship holder will be received by the institution.
  • Letter of agreement from the supervisor in Brazil: (Only when there is an accumulation of the scholarship with another remunerated activity or source of income). The requirement for agreement and the conditions for accumulating scholarships are provided for in the CAPES Ordinance No. 187, of September 28, 2023, which regulates the accumulation of master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral scholarships granted by CAPES with remunerated activity or other income.
