Program Overview
Program Overview
The DESIGN WORKSHOP 1-MODULE 2 program is offered by the University of Genoa, with the course code 95263, during the academic year 2025/2026. This 5-credit course is part of the SCIENZE DELL'ARCHITETTURA program and is taught in Italian.
Aims and Content
The program aims to transmit tools for the design of living spaces, with a focus on the notion of the "room" and its role in architectural projects. Through lectures, design exercises, and guest talks, students will develop critical reasoning and design skills.
Aims and Learning Outcomes
The program's objectives include:
- Providing tools for understanding and critically interpreting architectural organisms and their main elements
- Encouraging the development of critical design reasoning, analytical reading, and writing skills
- Demonstrating the emblematic role of the room in architectural design
- Training students in 2D and 3D drawing codes for architectural project communication
Teaching Methods
The program will be developed over one semester, with two preparatory sections and two design exercises. The exercises will be carried out individually and in pairs, complementing each other to encourage a unique and continuous design process.
Exercise 01: The Morpheme
This exercise involves reading a basic text and designing a small room, with a focus on the room's components, such as distribution, accesses, openings, structure, and furniture.
Exercise 02: The Lexeme
In this exercise, students will form two-person groups to develop the design of a single-family residence, applying the additive principle of construction "by rooms" and focusing on the central room's design.
Syllabus/Content
The program's content includes the study of central spaces, the notion of "room" in architecture, and the application of theoretical reasoning to residential design. A selected bibliography is provided, including works by Louis I. Kahn, among others.
Teachers and Exam Board
The program is taught by Beatrice Moretti, with lessons starting according to the didactic calendar. The exam board will assess students' projects, papers, and presentations.
Lessons
Lessons will be held according to the timetable available on the EasyAcademy portal.
Exams
The final exam will cover both exercises carried out during the semester, with assessments based on project quality, paper quality, presentation effectiveness, and commitment to the course.
Exam Description
The exam will verify students' learning of primary architectural design notions and themes proposed by the program. An intensive one-week workshop will be held in preparation for the critiques and final exam.
Assessment Methods
The final exam will be conducted in person and orally, with the presence of external guests as a jury. Students will demonstrate their critical-theoretical and strategic-design skills acquired during the course.
