Introduction

The ACOUSTICS program is offered by the University of Genoa, with the course code 65468, during the academic year 2025/2026.

Program Structure

  • The program consists of 1 CFU in the first year, specifically in Logopedia 9282 (L/SNT2) - Genova.
  • The scientific disciplinary sector is FIS/07.
  • The language of instruction is Italian.
  • The teaching location is Genova.
  • The course is conducted in the second semester.

Aims and Content

Aims and Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should:

  • Know the basics of acoustics.
  • Understand the laws of acoustics that intervene in language mechanisms.
  • Be familiar with the physical phenomenology underlying hearing.
  • Know the technical units of measurement used to characterize sounds.

Teaching Methods

The course is taught through lectures (10 hours) using screen presentations and exercises.

Syllabus/Content

The syllabus includes:

  • Physical quantities involved in sound.
  • Acoustic pressure.
  • Velocity of sound.
  • Characteristic impedance of a medium.
  • Sound intensity.
  • Sine plane waves.
  • Wavelength, frequency.
  • Fourier techniques.
  • Principle of superposition.
  • The ear and Fourier analysis.
  • Transmission and reflection coefficients in intensity.
  • Classification of sounds according to frequency.
  • Decibels.
  • SIL and SPL scales.
  • Frequency scale in the audible.
  • The human vocal apparatus.
  • Use of apps on mobile phones to check frequencies and formants by calculating Fourier transforms.

Recommended Reading/Bibliography

  • The texts of the presentations projected in class are made available online.
  • Supporting texts include "Elements of Biomedical Physics" by D. Scannicchio - E. Giroletti and "Lineamenti fi Medical Physics" by M Celasco (Acoustics chapter and related).

Teachers and Exam Board

The teacher for this course is Matteo Sanguineti.

Lessons

  • Lessons start according to the lecture timetable and Aulaweb pages of the course.
  • The class schedule is available on the Aulaweb pages.

Exams

Exam Description

Verification of learning takes place through written open-ended questions, simple numerical exercises, and discussion of papers.

Assessment Methods

Students must demonstrate they have learned the notions explained in the course and achieved the learning objectives.

Further Information

  • The examination cannot be taken if the propaedeuticities laid down in the Study Course Regulations are not met.
  • Failure to pass a single discipline entails repeating the entire examination.
