CUSTOMS DATA ANALYTICS LAB

Course Description

The CUSTOMS DATA ANALYTICS LAB course aims to provide students with the technical skills required to support research in economics, particularly in the management, processing, and reporting of analyses on large-size administrative statistical sources. The course focuses on the economic interpretation of results, with an application context concerning the analysis of data on import/export flows of goods handled by Italian Customs Offices, emphasizing the maritime mode of transport.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Manage and analyze large datasets
  • Report on the analysis carried out, understanding the economic meaning of the results obtained

Teaching Methods

The laboratory involves a participatory learning activity focused on designing an exploratory and predictive analysis of customs data, carried out in small groups. Students will:


  • Formulate original analytical hypotheses based on real data
  • Identify relevant variables and design customized indicators
  • Develop a descriptive or predictive analysis project using software tools such as R and Excel
  • Collaborate within the group to carry out the project
  • Present and discuss the results, receiving feedback from the instructor and peers

Syllabus/Content

The course will cover the analysis of data on import/export flows of goods handled by Italian Customs Offices, with a focus on the maritime mode of transport. This includes studying one of the most relevant components of the Italian balance of trade, defining maritime trade flows of each Port Authority, identifying commodity chains that insist on a geographical area, and studying the maritime hinterland of a port.
