Program Overview

ECONOMICS OF SPORT

The Economics of Sport program is designed to study sports phenomena from an economic perspective, covering both micro-economic and macro-economic levels. The discipline uses inductive and deductive methods, along with theoretical models, to understand the fundamental dynamics of economic action and the role of various actors operating in the sport economy.

OVERVIEW

Sports economics applies economic models to the sports field, focusing on topics such as the regulatory framework of sporting economic activity and the economic effects of major sporting events. The program aligns with the United Nations' 2030 Agenda, specifically Goal 8, which aims to foster sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

AIMS AND CONTENT

The program's objective is to apply the main economic models to the sports field, providing students with a deep understanding of the economic mechanisms of sport. The course covers theoretical foundations, the regulatory framework of sporting economic activity, and the economic effects of major sporting events.

Upon completing the program, students will be able to:

  • Apply the main economic models to the sports field
  • Understand the fundamental dynamics of economic action
  • Recognize the role of various actors operating in the sport economy
  • Analyze the economic effects of major sporting events

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of mathematical relationships between variables is necessary to follow the course profitably. Students should be familiar with concepts studied by economists, including numerical expressions of economic variables, graphs, and mathematical equations.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lectures totaling 48 hours, during which the main theoretical models will be presented and analyzed. The slides used in the lectures will be uploaded to the course platform, along with other materials.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course analyzes the main economic models applied to the field of sports, covering both microeconomic and macroeconomic perspectives. The program includes:

  • Theoretical foundations of sports economics

  • Economic effects of major sporting events

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The recommended textbook is "The Essentials of Economics" by N. Gregory Mankiw. Additional materials will be uploaded to the course platform.

TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD

The program is taught by Giulia Bianchi, with Riccardo Fermo Soliani and Marta Santagata serving as exam board members.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination consists of a written test with three open questions, lasting approximately 60 minutes.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The examination aims to test students' knowledge and acquisition of theoretical basics, as well as their ability to analyze economic problems studied in the course.
