Program Overview


ENGINEERING FOR PERSONALIZED MEDICINE RESEARCH TRACK

Overview

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the scientific activities performed within the department, related to the research field of engineering for personalized medicine. The students will be offered an internship in a lab of their choice, where they will learn to conduct a research project and evaluate new scientific/technical problems and questions.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of the course is to introduce the students to a set of laboratory techniques relevant to personalized medicine and to enable them to carry out an individual project in this field.


Aims and Learning Outcomes

  • Aim 1: Describe the engineering for personalized medicine-related scientific activities available in the department.
    • The students will acquire a general knowledge about the main research lines available in the department.
  • Aim 2: Evaluate and solve an engineering for personalized medicine problem and/or respond to a technical and scientific question in a real lab environment.
    • The students will perform an internship in a lab of their choice to conduct an individual research project in the framework of the engineering for personalized medicine field.

  • Frontal lessons followed by practical lab training in the chosen lab

  • Biomaterials: hydrogels synthesis
  • Drug delivery systems: nanoengineered polymeric microcapsules
  • Atomic force microscopy
  • Cell cultures techniques
  • Design of databases of medical interest
  • Design of interfaces (web and services) for medical devices

Exam Description

The exam consists in the presentation of the performed project, in the form of a ppt presentation.


Assessment Methods

The work performed in the hosting lab and the final presentation of the conducted project will allow to evaluate the achievements of Aim1 and Aim2.
