AIMS AND CONTENT

Learning Outcomes

The course provides students with the main geological field techniques and methods used in geological mapping and teaches them how to operate as field geologists. The course gives the basics for the interpretation of geological maps and the construction of geologic cross-sections. The course includes exercises in the field and one final 6-days long field campaign.

Aims and Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Prepare the map of the outcrops
  • Prepare the interpretative geological map
  • Use stereographic plots
  • Understand and describe geological structures in 3D
  • Use GIS to prepare a geological map

Teaching Methods

Fieldwork activities are aimed at the preparation of a geological map. The course includes both lectures in the class and geological fieldwork. Tests and evaluations during the course will be conducted.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Course Content

  • Review on the basics of topographic maps, the concepts of scale and resolution, triangulation of points in topographic maps, web cartographic repositories
  • Review on the stereographic projections, density plot, V-rule, structural contour lines
  • Review on lines and surfaces measurement with the geological compass
  • Equipment for geological field survey, fieldwork planning, and organization of fieldbook
  • Preparation of outcrops map, interpretative geological map, and its legend
  • Introduction to the use of GIS for geological mapping
  • 4 introductory field excursions and 5-days field campaign aimed at the preparation of the final geological map

EXAMS

Exam Description

The exam of Geological Mapping consists of an interview. The exam can be done after the preparation of the interpretative geological map and geological section (together with the student's individual report). The interview covers the topics presented during the lectures and includes the critical discussion on the field work products as well as on the personal fieldbook.

Assessment Methods

The oral exam aims at verifying the proper knowledge of the topics covered during the course; the exam includes the discussion on the outcrop map, interpretative geological map, and geological section (together with the student's individual report). The personal field book will also be evaluated. The student's ability to discuss the topics with proper terminology will be evaluated.

Exam Schedule

  • 22/01/2026, 14:30, GENOVA, Orale
  • 05/02/2026, 14:30, GENOVA, Orale
  • 25/06/2026, 14:30, GENOVA, Orale
  • 09/07/2026, 14:30, GENOVA, Orale
  • 23/07/2026, 14:30, GENOVA, Orale
  • 10/09/2026, 14:30, GENOVA, Orale

FURTHER INFORMATION

Regular and consistent attendance of lectures and course activities is strongly recommended. Working students are kindly asked to communicate their availability at the beginning of the course, so that alternative teaching activities can be arranged with the instructors in cases where attendance at regular lectures and field trips is not possible. If attendance of lectures and of the four introductory field excursions (prior to the geological field campaign) is below 80%, an admission test for the geological field campaign will be required to assess the basic knowledge essential for geological surveying. Students are asked to use appropriate clothing for fieldwork (including hiking boots) and Personal Protective Equipment provided by CCS. Students are also required to have necessary tools for geological field surveying.
