CREDITS AND SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR

The course is worth 1 cfu in the second year of the TECNICHE DI LABORATORIO BIOMEDICO program. The scientific disciplinary sector for this course is MED/04.

LANGUAGE AND TEACHING LOCATION

The language of instruction for this course is Italian, and it is taught in Genova.

SEMESTER AND MODULES

The course is offered during the first semester and is a module of the GENERAL PATHOLOGY, PHYSIOPATHOLOGY, IMMUNOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY program.

TEACHING MATERIALS

The teaching materials for this course are available on Aulaweb.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The principal aims of the General Pathology teaching are:

  • The knowledge of the aetiology and pathogenesis of human diseases
  • The understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for cell damage, tumor growth, and inflammation

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Be fully knowledgeable of the aetio-pathogenesis of the principal human diseases
  • Classify the different origins of diseases
  • Clearly identify the mechanisms of cell adaptation to damage and cell death-dependent changes
  • Explain the inflammation process and tissue repair
  • Understand the principal molecular and morphological aspects of tumor cells

PREREQUISITES

The basic knowledge required for this course includes anatomy, histology, biochemistry, and physiology.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching is composed of 20 hours of live lectures on all the syllabus subjects, which are illustrated through specific Power Point presentations available on Aulaweb. The frontal lessons could be carried out remotely in online mode using the Teams platform if necessary.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The syllabus includes:

  • Causes of disease: injury by physical agents (radiations, thermal, and traumatic injury); chemical and drug injury
  • Cellular pathology: cell injury and cellular adaptations, regressive processes, atrophy, degenerative processes, and cell death (apoptosis and necrosis)
  • Acute and chronic inflammation: inflammatory cells, chemical mediators of inflammation, inflammatory cytokines, leucocyte migration, systemic effects of inflammation, acute phase response, classification of acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, and granulomas

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The recommended reading includes:

  • Patologia generale by GM Pontieri, Piccin
  • Patologia Generale by M. Parola, EdiSes
