AIMS AND CONTENT

Learning Outcomes

The aim of this teaching course is to provide students with an advanced overview of sedimentary processes. Main topics include:


  • Transport and sedimentation processes: selective and mass transports; settling and gravitative deposits; sedimentary structures.
  • Sedimentary environments, depositional systems, and facies models: alluvial, deltaic, littoral, platform, and deep sea systems.
  • Dynamic of succession and depositional sedimentary sequences.

Aims and Learning Outcomes

Attendance and participation in the planned training activities (lessons, classroom and field exercises) will allow the student to acquire advanced knowledge on environments and related sedimentary processes. Specifically, the student will be able to:


  • Know how to describe and classify the main types of clastic deposits
  • Know how to distinguish and identify the sedimentary structures, associating them with sedimentary dynamics
  • Know how to connect the compositional, textural, and structural features of sediments to environments and specific depositional systems
  • Know how to connect sedimentary types and structures to the tectonically controlled basins

Teaching Methods

The lectures are delivered in person in the classroom with the aid of multimedia presentations. The laboratory activities in the classroom will aim to describe and discuss sedimentary structures in rock samples and use them to recognize sedimentary facies and depositional systems. The field activity will aim to guide students in the recognition of sedimentary rocks, physical stratigraphy, the sedimentology of clastic deposits, and related depositional systems and environments.

EXAMS

Exam Description

The exam consists of an integrated test between the two modules of the course. For a detailed description of the exam modalities, see Geology 2 - code 80270.


Assessment Methods

  • The practical test will verify the effective acquisition of the necessary knowledge to discuss the sedimentary structures in rock samples, physical stratigraphy, and sedimentology of clastic deposits.
  • The oral test will focus on the topics covered during the lectures, laboratory activities in the classroom, and fieldwork. Its aim is to assess whether the student has acquired a sufficient level of knowledge and whether they have developed the ability to integrate the concepts from both modules. Additionally, the student's capacity to discuss the topics clearly and use the correct terminology will be evaluated.
