INFORMATIC SKILLS

Course Description

The INFORMATIC SKILLS course aims to introduce students to the use of computers and application programs through theoretical lessons and hands-on exercises. The course focuses on basic notions about the usage of computers in scientific applications, including hardware, software, information, representation, text editors, spreadsheets, and presentations.


Learning Outcomes

The course aims to make students capable of:


  • Using Calc to process and display data, such as those acquired from databases available on the internet.
  • Using Write to produce simple scientific documents.
  • Using Impress to produce simple scientific presentations.

Prerequisites

To use spreadsheets properly, students should have basic mathematical, reasoning, and analytical skills, typically covered by mathematics courses in the first year.


Teaching Methods

Teaching takes place over 10-12 weeks, including either 2 hours of classroom lessons or guided laboratory. During the semester, there will be two assessments during class time and home exercises (working in a group).

The course includes introductory lessons followed by guided workshops on how to:


  • Process and visualize data using Calc
  • Prepare documents using Writer
  • Prepare presentations using Impress
