INTERIOR DESIGN WORKSHOP 1-1

Overview

The course aims to update the traditional interiors of large ferry boats and tune them with a current vision and evolution of interior design, in particular with the most advanced hypotheses of typological revolution of the ship itself. The teaching aims, through the design work, to anticipate the spatial suggestions for a new generation of passenger ships.

Aims and Content

Learning Outcomes

The module aims to bring the traditional interior of the large ferry ship closer to a more current vision and in line with the evolution of interior design and above all with the most advanced hypotheses of the typological revolution of the ship itself. The teaching aims, through the tool of the project, to accompany and if possible anticipate through interior design the spatial suggestions for a new generation of passenger transport ships.

Aims and Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • apply design principles to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces in passengers maritime transport;
  • evaluate and integrate regulatory, safety, and ergonomic requirements into their designs;
  • develop innovative solutions for optimizing space and enhancing comfort and functionality;
  • address technical challenges such as weight containment, modular construction, and sustainability;
  • communicate design concepts and project outcomes effectively through presentations and comprehensive documentation;
  • independently and in a group, set up the research process to support the project, make design choices, and develop skills in negotiation, teambuilding, and leadership.
  • elaborate initial design proposals through the use of graphic and digital techniques, including two- and three-dimensional representations, technical sketches, and conceptual models;
  • effectively argue and present one's own research, analysis, and project work with the use of appropriate technical language.

Prerequisites

There are no specific requirements.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is organized into different and complementary activities, the main ones being:

  • frontal theoretical lectures or seminars;
  • group activities (debates, brief, brainstorming, project reviews…);
  • reviews and laboratory activities.

Syllabus/Content

This module focuses on the design of functional spaces within flexible spaces in passengers' maritime transport. It covers the principles and practices necessary for creating efficient, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing living and transportation environments. Students will engage in a blend of theoretical instruction, case studies, and practical projects to develop comprehensive design skills specific to these unique spaces.

Topics Overview

  • Introduction to Functional Space Design: overview of passengers' transports spaces, historical context, and current trends.
  • Ergonomic and Spatial Planning: space optimization and multifunctional design, layout design for different types of passengers' transports spaces.
  • Regulatory and Safety Considerations: notes on safety regulations and compliance standards, accessibility, and inclusive design.
  • Innovative Design Solutions: modular and prefabricated construction techniques, sustainable materials, and eco-friendly practices, energy efficiency, and off-grid living solutions.
  • Technical Challenges and Solutions: weight containment and structural integrity, integration of utilities and systems, adapting designs to various environments and climates.
  • Aesthetics and User Experience: balancing functionality with aesthetic appeal, notes on color/material/finishes theory, and lighting design, creating a cohesive design theme.

Recommended Reading/Bibliography

Specific bibliographical information will be provided at the beginning of the course and in class in reference to the topics covered.

  • On-line magazines: Various, Cruise and Ferries, Editor: Tudor Rose, Year: yearly updates.

Exams

Exam Description

The examination takes place orally and consists of the presentation and critical discussion of the written and graphic works developed during the module. During the interview, the student must:

  • illustrate his or her work with property of language and methodological coherence, using tools such as presentations and synthesis graphs to support the discourse;
  • justify the design choices made in the light of the theoretical contents learnt and the research phase preparatory to the project;
  • demonstrate critical awareness of the cultural and technical context of the theme developed.

Assessment Methods

The evaluation is based on:

  • completeness and graphic quality of the papers (consistency with the assigned theme);
  • ability to analyse and synthesise, linking theory and design practice;
  • clarity of presentation and command of terminology during the oral presentation;
  • transversal skills demonstrated (teamwork management, autonomy, problem solving). The final outcome also contributes to the verification of competences related to the Open Badges foreseen:
  • personal competence (basic level),
  • learning to learn skills (basic level),
  • project management and project creation (advanced level).
