Course Overview
Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases, in particular of multi-system disease processes.

Aims and Learning Outcomes
The objective of the course is to provide to dental hygiene students a basic knowledge of the main, and most common, medical conditions managed in Internal Medicine.
- The student will approach fundamental concepts concerning the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment/prevention principles of the diseases presented during the course.
Teaching Methods
- The course is articulated in 20 hours of frontal lecture.
- For admission to the examination, it is required that at least 75% of the lectures have been attended.

- The "Internist's approach" to the patient (introduction, patient's history, physical examination)
- Acute and chronic renal failure
- Asthma
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Atherosclerosis and related diseases (coronary disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease)
- Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
- Bleeding Disorders
- Heart failure
- Sexually Transmitted Infections
- Oral manifestations of systemic diseases
