MYCOLOGY PROGRAM

Overview

The mycology program is a discipline that studies fungi, unicellular and multicellular organisms. Fungi play a fundamental role in the economy of nature and human, present in all environmental compartments, and are protagonists in many innovative biotechnologies.

Aims and Content

Learning Outcomes

The teaching aims to provide the basic elements of mycology, including biology, ecology, and systematics, and to illustrate the importance of fungi in the economy of nature, man, biodegradation, and biotechnology.

Aims and Learning Outcomes

Attendance, active participation in face-to-face classes, and individual study will allow the student to:

  • know the history of mycology in relation to botany
  • understand the morphological, metabolic, reproductive, trophic, and ecological characteristics of fungal organisms
  • learn the methodology to identify macrofungi on a morphological and molecular basis

Prerequisites

General notions of general biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry are necessary to deal with the contents of the teaching.

Teaching Methods

The teaching consists of lectures and practical activities, delivered through multimedia presentations. Class attendance is highly recommended.

Syllabus/Content

The program of the module includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:

  • brief history of mycology and relations with botany
  • general characteristics of fungal organisms
  • role of fungi in natural systems
  • fungi as bioremediation agents and some applications in biotechnology
  • modern taxonomy and synthetic illustration of the main fungi
  • essential method for the recognition of edible mushrooms on a morphological basis

Recommended Reading/Bibliography

The multimedia teaching material used by the teacher during the lectures and practical activities will be available at the end of the cycle of lectures/laboratory exercises. The following texts are supporting texts:

  • Deacon W.B., 2005. Fungal Biology. Blackwell Publishing.
  • Rambelli A., Pasqualetti M., 1996. Nuovi fondamenti di Micologia. Jaca Boock SpA, Milano.
  • Zotti M., Traverso M., Boccardo F., 2006. Funghi di Liguria. Marco Sabatelli Editore, Savona.
  • Boccardo F., Traverso M., Vizzini A., Zotti M., 2008. Guida ai funghi d'Italia. Zanichelli Editore, Bologna.
