ANTROPOLOGIA FORENSE

Course Description

The Antropologia Forense course provides a general introduction to the principles of studying human remains for identification purposes, based on the analysis of skeletal shape and size, and the application of demographic reference data. During the lessons, anatomical and pathological variations useful for identification will be described, and injuries useful for determining the cause of death or peri- or post-mortem events that affected the body will be explained. The course will also cover osteological analysis and comparison between bones of different animal species.


Learning Objectives

The student will learn the basic notions of the following topics:


  • Introduction to the history of forensic anthropology and basic legislative framework
  • Skeletal collections
  • Human osteology: macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the skeletal and dental apparatus
  • Metric and non-metric analysis of the skeleton
  • Taphonomy of skeletal remains
  • Species determination
  • Determination of the time of death
  • Diagnosis of sex
  • Age estimation
  • Determination of biogeographic origin
  • Stature estimation
  • Craniofacial reconstruction
  • Identification of skeletal remains
  • Diagnosis of cause of death
  • Skeletal injuries
  • Recovery and restoration of skeletal remains

Teaching Methods

The course will consist of lectures and practical activities.
