Course Description

The course aims to provide students with a broad cultural overview of logopedic intervention in communicative-linguistic disorders of auditory origin, with particular attention to prelingual infantile deafness and early intervention.

Objectives

The course intends to provide students with a foundation in the theory and practice of logopedic intervention for patients with deafness, focusing on the development of critical competencies and skills specific to the logopedist profession.


Expected Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:


  • Know the basic theory and applied theory behind the comprehensive care of patients with deafness
  • Recognize the main nosological classifications of deafness according to different parameters
  • Consider deafness as a complex pathology with influences on the overall development of the child
  • Critically evaluate different approaches to the rehabilitation of children with hearing loss
  • Apply specific assessment protocols for perception abilities according to the oralist approach
  • Design a rehabilitation plan consistent with the diagnostic profile and the child's development characteristics
  • Deduce from the initial assessment any critical issues in the realization of the rehabilitation project

Teaching Methods

The course is held in the first semester of the second year through frontal/interactive lessons using slide projections, cooperative learning, and discussions in small groups.

  • Historical framework of deafness: from the Milan Congress (1870) to the current state
  • Deafness in children: causes, types, and comparisons
  • Language development: evolutionary comparisons between typically developing children and children with hearing loss
  • Cognition, affect, and social development in children with deafness
  • Assessment of auditory abilities
  • Acoustic prostheses and cochlear implants: training for their use and approach to the family
  • Oralistic approaches to the rehabilitation of deaf children
  • Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT)
  • Non-oral and mixed approaches to the rehabilitation of children with deafness
  • Cochlear implants: the role of the logopedist in various phases
  • Examples of treatment through logopedic units

  • The exam will mainly focus on the topics covered during the frontal lessons and aims to assess not only if the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge but also if they have acquired the ability to critically analyze what has been learned.
