IMMUNOEMATOLOGIA I

Course Description

The course of Immunoematologia 1 deals with the fundamental elements of laboratory tests for the execution of blood group and pre-transfusion tests. It also provides notions on the preparation, conservation, and shipment of blood components.


Objectives and Contents

Educational Objectives

Acquire basic notions of immunology and genetics of major blood group systems ABO and Rh; transfusion compatibility tests; platelet and leukocyte antigens; use of direct and indirect Coombs tests.


Detailed Educational Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The objective of the course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills for determining blood group and searching for irregular anti-erythrocyte antibodies. A specific objective of the course is also to acquire the knowledge necessary to use basic immuno-hematological tests for the provision of a safe transfusion service.


Basic elements of organization of a Blood Component Production Center are provided, including the production of different blood components and good laboratory practice rules to ensure the safety and quality of blood and blood components.


Teaching Methods

  • Frontal lessons; in case of health emergencies, lessons will be delivered according to the University's directives.

  • Immunology: Basics of Immunology (antigen, antibody, immune response)
  • Genetics: Basics of Genetics (general principles, genetics of blood groups)
  • Blood Groups: ABO system, Rh system, other blood group systems.
  • Notes on platelet and leukocyte antigens.
  • Direct and indirect Antiglobulin test: principles, methodologies, and interpretation of results.
  • Techniques of antibody elution.
  • Pre-transfusion compatibility tests.
  • Preparation, conservation, and shipment of blood components.
  • Quality controls in an Immuno-hematology laboratory and in a blood component production laboratory.
