Program Overview

The program in question is "Korpusbasierte Textanalyse und interkulturelle Kommunikation" (Corpus-Based Text Analysis and Intercultural Communication), offered by the University of Genoa.


Course Description

This course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in the use of corpora in German language, particularly in text analysis and intercultural communication. The course will cover the application of digital tools and quantitative and qualitative methods for the interpretation and management of linguistic data.


Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:


  • Utilize corpora in German language for text analysis and intercultural communication
  • Apply digital tools and methods for the interpretation and management of linguistic data
  • Develop metalinguistic competences in German language
  • Analyze different forms of textual communication
  • Understand the theory of terminology and compile terminological schedules in German language

Course Structure

The course consists of a theoretical module (30 hours) and linguistic exercises (120 hours). The theoretical module will cover topics such as:


  • Introduction to corpus linguistics
  • Corpora and linguistic analysis
  • Collection of corpora in German language
  • Digital resources for the construction and interrogation of corpora
  • Applications of corpus linguistics

The linguistic exercises will focus on the development of the four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) and will include the study of grammatical structures and vocabulary.


Assessment

The assessment will consist of:


  • A written exam (50%) at the end of the theoretical module
  • A written assignment (50%) on a topic related to the course, with a presentation and discussion

Prerequisites

Students are required to have a B2 level of proficiency in German language.


Teaching Methods

The course will use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, and practical exercises. The theoretical module will be taught in the second semester, while the linguistic exercises will be held throughout the academic year.
