Presentation
The Ortodonzia program aims to provide students with the ability to recognize, distinguish, and classify clinical gnathic pictures, acquire knowledge on the evaluation of OPT, and other radiographs performed for diagnostic purposes in the orthognathic check-up.
Objectives and Contents
Formative Objectives
The teaching of Ortognatodonzia has the objective of acquiring the ability to recognize, distinguish, and classify clinical gnathic pictures, acquire knowledge on the evaluation of OPT, and other radiographs performed for diagnostic purposes in the orthognathic check-up.
Detailed Formative Objectives and Learning Outcomes
- An articulated and in-depth knowledge of the program's topics
- A good knowledge of orthodontic materials
- The ability to perform a complete orthodontic clinical visit (anamnesis, clinical chart, evaluation of the dental situation, both general and orthodontic)
- The ability to request diagnostic tests (radiographs, specialist visits) with appropriate motivations
- The ability to perform a second orthodontic visit (examination of plaster models, space evaluation, cephalometric tracing) and formulate a diagnosis
- The ability to evaluate the urgency of orthodontic treatment, with particular attention to interceptive treatment
Didactic Methods
The program includes lectures and pre-clinical internship exercises in cephalometry, analysis of plaster models, study, and evaluation of OPT, and analysis of spaces in the arch.
Program/Content
The program covers the following topics:
- Generalities
- Definition of "malocclusion"
- Classification of malocclusion from the dental point of view in the three planes of space
- Dentition, mixed dentition, permanent dentition, and epochs of replacement
- Principles of cranio-facial growth
- Vicious habits
- Dental anomalies (form, number, volume, position, development)
- Orthognathic check-up: clinical visit, study models, examination of models, space analysis, orthopantomography, cephalometric tracing
- Cephalometry: importance, anatomical tracing, points, planes, and cephalometric angles
- Diagnosis: dental, skeletal, and functional
- Physiology of tooth movement
- Continuous and intermittent forces, orthodontic and orthopedic forces
- Biomechanics of tooth movements: concept of force, center of resistance, center of rotation, moment of a force
- Orthodontic materials: bands, brackets, metallic wires, elastic ligatures, springs, orthodontic pliers, cements, and materials for bracket fixation
