Program Overview

GEOMORFOLOGIA

Course Description

Geomorfologia is the science that studies the nature, history, genesis, and distribution of relief forms and superficial deposits connected to them. The course will illustrate the origin and evolution of forms in relation to agents and endogenous and exogenous processes, geology, climate, vegetation, and human relationships.

Objectives and Contents

Educational Objectives

The course aims to develop an analytical, interpretative, and evolutionary study of the forms present on the Earth's surface, particularly the causes that generate and modify them, for both specific purposes and understanding geological processes.

Detailed Educational Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The course provides an overview of the genesis and evolution of physical landscapes, addressing key concepts in azonal and plurizonal geomorphology, climatic and structural geomorphology, for a comprehensive interpretation of the geomorphological landscape, including anthropic modifications. At the end of the course, students will be able to recognize, interpret, and classify the main relief forms.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of cartography, physical geography, and geology is required.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of frontal lessons and exercises in the classroom and in the field. Field activities are planned to analyze directly what is discussed in class.

Program/Content

  • Introduction to geomorphology: relationships between endogenous and exogenous processes, between morphology and geological structure.
  • Alteration and degradation of rocks.
  • Fluvial forms and processes.
  • Marine-coastal forms and processes.
  • Slope forms and processes.
  • Karst forms and processes.
  • Glacial and periglacial forms and processes.
  • Aeolian forms and processes.
  • Anthropogenic forms and processes.

Exams

Examination Methods

The exam consists of an oral test during which the contents covered in the course will be discussed.

Assessment Methods

The exam aims to verify the learning of the topics covered during the lessons. The forms of relief and the morphogenetic processes associated with them will be discussed, also with the aid of cartographic and photographic material. The student's critical reasoning ability, exposition capacity, and correct use of technical-scientific terminology will also be evaluated.
