Objectives and Contents
Educational Objectives (Detail) and Learning Outcomes
The course aims to introduce the concept of cultural landscape and its evolution in the international debate on heritage conservation, analyzing emblematic case studies that highlight challenges and good practices in managing the balance between protection and transformation. Through critical reflections on the management modalities of cultural landscapes in a context of accelerating environmental, social, and economic changes, students will gain specific skills.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and define the concept of cultural landscape, recognizing its theoretical and normative evolution in the context of cultural heritage conservation at an international level.
- Critically analyze case studies of cultural landscapes, identifying recurring challenges and effective strategies in the management of conservation and transformation processes, developing awareness of the tensions between protection, development, and participation.
- Use an interdisciplinary approach in interpreting cultural landscapes, with particular attention to planning tools, governance, and community involvement.
Teaching Methods
The course is held mainly through frontal lessons. The possibility of territorial visits will be evaluated.

- Notions of landscape and cultural landscape.
- The UNESCO World Heritage Convention and the definition of the notion of Cultural Landscape.
- The European Landscape Convention.
- Cultural landscapes and the 20th century.
