Program Overview

The Patologia Generale program is designed to teach students the study of disease causes, damage resulting from them, the body's reaction to damage (inflammation), tissue repair, and the basics of general oncology.

Educational Objectives

The program aims to:

• Provide students with knowledge of the etiological basis and pathogenetic mechanisms of human diseases.
• Give students a general understanding of the mechanisms underlying cellular pathology, inflammatory response, and neoplastic diseases.

Detailed Educational Objectives and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, students will be able to:

• Know in depth the etiological basis and pathogenetic mechanisms of human diseases.
• Classify different disease causes.
• Recognize adaptive responses to damage and modifications associated with cell death.
• Know in depth the processes of inflammation and tissue repair.
• Understand the molecular basis of oncology and the characteristics of neoplastic cells.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of anatomy, histology, biochemistry, and physiology is required.

Teaching Methods

The program consists of 20 hours of frontal lessons on all program topics. The topics are illustrated by the teacher using PowerPoint presentations shared on Aulaweb. Students with certified Specific Learning Disorders (DSA), disabilities, or other educational needs are invited to contact the teacher and the disability referent at the beginning of the course to agree on possible didactic methods.

Program/Content

• General etiology: study of physical causes of disease (radiations, heat, mechanical force).
• Cellular pathology: knowledge of the main types of cellular adaptation (atrophy and hypertrophy), mechanisms of cellular suffering, and cell death by necrosis and apoptosis.
• Study of acute and chronic inflammation.
• General oncology: definition and characteristics of tumors and neoplastic cells.

Texts/Bibliography

Dispenses on Aulaweb covering all program topics will be provided to students. Suggested textbooks include:

Exams

Exam Methods

The exam consists of an oral test and takes place in the presence of the course teachers. The interview focuses on the program carried out during the frontal lessons.

Assessment Methods

The final vote is expressed in thirtieths and is based on:

• The ability to treat the requested topics in a transversal and critical manner.
• Correctness, clarity, synthesis, and fluency of exposition.
• Mastery of the subject matter.
• Adoption of appropriate terminology.
