Program Overview

ICT, Sistemi Multimediali e Web per il Turismo (Mod. 1)

Course Description

The course covers advanced aspects of using personal computers, information systems, and networks in the digital society. It illustrates both technical essentials and tools and systems, and may include an individual project where the student develops a product to professional standards.

Objectives and Contents

Educational Objectives

The course focuses on web communication, the use of Artificial Intelligence tools, and the professional use of computer tools. It includes theoretical arguments and a project that students must develop, either individually or in small groups. The project consists of developing a thematic website using professional tools.

Detailed Educational Objectives and Learning Outcomes

Following Bloom's taxonomy, students will achieve the following outcomes (levels 2 to 4):

  • Describe: 1) the fundamentals of how multimedia documents are encoded within computers and on the internet, and different tools for converting, writing, and transmitting documents; 2) the world wide web and principles for web-based communication design; 3) conversational AI engines.
  • Apply: state-of-the-art design schemes for multimedia and web communication.
  • Compare: different tools and techniques for writing, archiving, and communicating information, particularly for the web.
  • Design and realize: a genuine website for culture, commerce, tourism, or similar fields of application.

Prerequisites

Basic mathematics and English language skills.

Teaching Methods

The course will use the flipped classroom methodology. Aulaweb will be organized by weeks; study texts and video lessons will be published at the beginning of each week. There will be meetings with students on Thursdays and/or Fridays (during official time slots) to discuss the program published at the beginning of the week. For the system to be effective, students must study the material before each lesson-meeting. During these lessons, exercises and discussions will be held in small groups (4 or 5 students) of varying composition.

Program/Content

  • Digital documents, coding, binary numeration, textual and non-textual documents, compression (lossless and lossy), website, web and social marketing notions (blog, website, provider, notifications, mobile, tracking).
  • The network: generalities, addresses, LAN, services, wireless, localization, cloud, cookies.
  • Security and protection (malware, encryption, secure web, digital signature).
  • Multimedia: sound, image, and video, lossy compression, standards.
  • Tools for web development.

Texts/Bibliography

Study material will be published on Aulaweb.

Exams

Examination Method

The exam consists of a theoretical exam, through a test on Aulaweb and its discussion. The theoretical exam provides a maximum of 24 points. To this is added a practical exam, where each student develops a communication and marketing project, using state-of-the-art computer productivity tools. The project provides a maximum of 6 points. Honors can be assigned when both parts deserve an excellence grade.

Assessment Method

The exam will assess the ability to describe the fundamentals of how multimedia documents are encoded within computers and on the internet, and different tools for converting, writing, and transmitting documents; as well as knowledge of the organization of the world wide web and principles for web-based communication design. It will also assess how the student is able to use state-of-the-art design schemes for multimedia and web communication, as well as the ability to compare different tools and techniques for writing, archiving, and communicating information, particularly for the web. The project will allow assessing the ability to design a genuine website (or mobile app) for culture, commerce, tourism, or similar fields of application. It will also assess the ability to use AI prompts in solving problems and developing digital documents.
