Introduction to the MSc by Research Entomology Course

The MSc by Research Entomology course is a wholly practical program, with learning taking place exclusively in the field or laboratory. This unique approach ensures that students receive immersive, hands-on training in entomology, without the distraction of written exams or shared modules with other courses.

Program Structure and Teaching

Upon arrival, students receive a comprehensive Watkins and Doncaster entomology starter pack, valued at ｣300, which includes essential tools such as forceps, pins, cards, and boxes. The program prioritizes career development in entomology, recognizing the importance of practical and analytical skills in future employment. Small-group teaching, led by expert entomologists, facilitates rewarding discussions and personalized attention.

Access to Entomology Collections

Students have access to the British Entomological and Natural History Society's Pelham-Clinton Building, which houses a magnificent collection of insects, a library containing entomology texts, and a wide variety of entomological journals. The nationally accredited Cole Museum of Zoology also provides significant, donated insect collections for study. Additionally, module leaders' private collections are utilized to facilitate in-depth research.

Techniques and Identification Module

The program features a single taught module, which includes field trips to interesting habitats and museums to study important collections. Students learn essential skills such as GIS and spatial analysis, statistical analysis using R, and specialist tools like MaxEnt to study geographical distributions. Assessment of this module is conducted through practical spot tests, quantitative skills evaluation, and the construction of an insect collection.

Research and Publication

As a research-based master's program, the aspiration is for every student to complete the course with at least one manuscript submitted, in press, or published.
