Program Overview
MSc Applied International Development with NODAI
The University of Reading has partnered with the Tokyo University of Agriculture (NODAI) to offer a double master's degree programme, enabling students to pursue their interests and career in international development and agriculture at two prominent institutions.
Double Master's Degree Programme
The two-year programme allows students to study an MSc Applied International Development at Reading and a Master of Agricultural Science in International Agricultural Development at NODAI. Students will study a wide range of natural and social sciences subjects, including agriculture, international development, and rural development.
What You Will Study
At Reading, students will study an MSc in Applied International Development through the Graduate Institute of International Development, Agriculture and Economics (GIIDAE). GIIDAE offers programmes in international development, applied economics and marketing, and agriculture. Students will investigate development issues at the international and community level by studying theoretical frameworks for analysing social change caused by planned development initiatives.
At NODAI, students will study for a Master of Agricultural Science in the Department of International Agricultural Development. This department is renowned for conducting interdisciplinary research that combines natural and social sciences methodologies. Studying in the department allows students to pursue multidisciplinary and field-oriented studies in six specialisations:
- Rural development
- Agricultural economics
- Water and soil management
- Horticulture
- Plant protection
- Genetics plant breeding
Programme Structure
University of Reading Pathway
- Students will enrol at Reading in September for their first two semesters from September to June.
- On successful completion of the first semester and successful admission to NODAI, students will transfer to Japan for the remainder of their programme (a further three semesters).
- Students transferring to NODAI in April will complete the remaining second semester at Reading online, with the support of GIIDAE.
Tokyo University of Agriculture (NODAI) Pathway
- Students will enrol at NODAI in April.
- On successful completion of the first semester in August and successful admission to the University of Reading, students will transfer to Reading for two academic semesters from September to June.
- In April, at the end of their second semester at Reading, students will return to Japan for the first semester of their second year and study for two more semesters.
- Students returning to NODAI in April will complete their second-semester obligations at Reading online, with the support of GIIDAE.
Dissertations
- Students will complete one dissertation that will be submitted to both universities.
- If students start their dissertation project while at Reading, they will complete it during their time in Japan at NODAI.
- Students will complete one dissertation project, with academic supervision from academics at both institutions.
- The dissertation will be assessed separately by both universities.
- Students will have access to all University of Reading and NODAI systems and support throughout their studies.

The double master's degree programme offers the following discounts:
- For Reading pathway, 42% discount of NODAI tuition fee.
- For NODAI pathway, 40% discount of Reading international tuition fee.
Admission Requirements
English language requirements apply to both institutions, and students must meet the standards before they can begin their studies. The University of Reading offers Pre-Sessional English courses, which are available for completion before starting studies at Reading.
How to Apply
To study for the double master's degree programme, students must apply to the University of Reading and NODAI separately and gain admission to both institutions. Staff at both NODAI and the University of Reading can support students in the application process.

- At NODAI, students will have to sit an entrance exam.

University of Reading Application Process
- When applying, students should select the MSc Applied International Development programme and choose the NODAI pathway on the application form.
- Applications are accepted year-round, but it's essential to allow time for visa processing. The recommended application deadline is 1 July for a September start at Reading.
