The BA History and English Literature program is designed to provide students with a rich and vital literary inheritance that informs the way we think about the world. The program expresses how we feel about ourselves and others, stimulating both intellect and imagination.

Program Description

At Reading, the study of English literature provides not only a rewarding challenge and an active pleasure, but also the foundation of a critical and cultural awareness that will remain with you for life. The department is very research-active, with a century-long history of innovation in English studies. The curriculum continues to extend to include contemporary American literature as well as new writing from Britain and Ireland.

• 97% of students said teaching staff are good at explaining things (National Student Survey 2025, 97.4% of responders from the Department of English Literature).
• 95% of graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduation (based on analysis of HESA data, Graduate Outcomes Survey 2022/23; includes first degree English Literature responders).
• 100% of research is of international standing (REF 2021, combining 4, 3 and 2* submissions English Language and Literature).

Study Abroad Opportunities

In the second year, students may be able to spend a semester studying abroad at one of the partner institutions in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, and the USA. This is a great opportunity to continue the study of English literature while immersing oneself in a different culture.

The program is available on a full-time basis, lasting 3 years.
