Program Overview
Introduction to Languages for All
The University of Reading offers a program called Languages for All, which provides students with the opportunity to learn a new language. The program includes a range of languages, such as Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek, Russian, and Spanish.

Arabic Program
The Arabic program is designed for students who want to learn the language and explore its rich culture. With over 230 million native speakers, Arabic is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world.
What's it Like to Learn Arabic?
The program provides students with friendly classes and rich language and cultural resources, allowing them to quickly develop confidence in using spoken and written Arabic. Students will explore a language that is intimately connected to science, mathematics, politics, economics, literature, art, and philosophy.
How to Sign Up
New students who want to take a Languages for All module for credit must contact the module selection team. Existing students who want to take a Languages for All module for credit need to sign up via RISIS module selection. Non-credit students must submit the non-credit application form, which opens in September.
Placement Test
If students have any previous knowledge of Arabic, they must complete the placement test so that they can be placed in the correct stage. The placement test is only open from April to October.
Modules Available
The program offers the following modules:
- LA1PA8-IWLP ARABIC 1: This beginner's module is for students who have no prior knowledge or virtually no knowledge of Arabic.
- LA1PA2-IWLP ARABIC 2: This post-beginner module is for students who have some basic knowledge of Arabic.
- LA1PA3-IWLP ARABIC 3: This lower-intermediate module is for students who have some previous knowledge of Arabic.
Module Descriptions
Each module has a detailed description:
- Arabic 1 module description: This module will provide an introduction to Arabic, concentrating on its use in familiar, everyday situations. Students will acquire a basic understanding of the language and the ability to communicate at a survival level.
- Arabic 2 module description: Students will increase their ability to communicate in Arabic by consolidating and building on their existing knowledge of language necessary for everyday situations.
- Arabic 3 module description: Students will increase their ability to communicate in Arabic through engagement with a range of socially relevant and interesting topics and a short research project.
