Program Overview


PGCert Pharmacy Practice

The PGCert Pharmacy Practice is a workplace-based programme, aligned to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's (RPS) Post-registration Foundation Pharmacist Curriculum (2021). Tailored for early-career pharmacists working in any patient-facing role, the programme will equip you with the knowledge, clinical skills and confidence to make effective decisions and deliver excellent patient care.


Overview

This collaborative programme between local NHS pharmacy services and the University provides the opportunity to gain experience and feedback that will inform your personal development plan. Its primary aim is to enable pharmacists to become confident and adaptable practitioners with wider capabilities including enhanced consultation, clinical examination, and digital literacy skills.


Learning

Over 12 months, you will benefit from an engaging, blended learning experience that combines face-to-face teaching with interactive online activities. Through workshops, directed and self-directed learning, and workplace-based assessment, you will build a professional portfolio that demonstrates your ability to deliver holistic, person-centred care. As a workplace-based learning programme, placements are part of your employment prior to enrolment and you will require the support of an Educational Supervisor in your workplace.


Entry Requirements

  • A pharmacy degree (BSc, BPharm, or MPharm).
  • Registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • A practice-base with access to a workplace educational supervisor. The programme is suitable for pharmacists working in patient-facing roles in primary or secondary care).
    • You should discuss your application with your manager prior to applying as workplace-based support is essential to the programme.
  • Complete a statement of purpose.
    • The student statement should be between 300 and 500 words.
    • It is used to support evidence of meeting the entry criteria, as well as determining your preparedness to undertake the programme of study.
  • Prepare the following documents:
    • Checklist for foundation programme
    • Workplace-based learning declaration
    • If you are being part sponsored: Proof of funding
    • If you are self-funding, or doing your learning in practice hours with an organisation who is not your employer, the self-funding declaration

Structure

The PGCert consists of three compulsory modules:


  • Clinical 1: Cardiology and Respiratory
    • This module develops your communication, consultation and decision-making skills.
    • Facilitated workshops will further your knowledge of cardiology and respiratory conditions.
  • Clinical 2: Gastroenterology and Endocrinology
    • This module focuses on developing your team-working skills and using your expertise to provide support, education and training to multi-disciplinary colleagues.
    • Clinical topics of gastroenterology and endocrinology will be covered in facilitated workshops.
  • Clinical 3: Infection, Surgery and Neurology
    • In this module, you will develop advanced reflective thinking skills, improve self-awareness and enhance your ability to adapt to new and challenging situations.
    • Facilitated workshops will further your knowledge of infection, surgery and neurology.

Fees

  • New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £1,500 (£500 per module).
  • Flexible/modular study is charged on a pro-rata basis.
  • Fees will increase each year according to inflation (up to 4%) and will be rounded up to the nearest £50.
  • New international students: Not applicable - this course is only open to UK applicants
