Program Overview


BSc Microbiology with Foundation

The BSc Microbiology with Foundation course is a four-year program that includes a year of foundational study, leading directly into the three-year course. As part of the UK's oldest microbiology department, students can develop laboratory skills in purpose-built microbiology facilities and be taught by world-leading experts, with particular strengths in virology and bacteriology.


Overview

Expand your knowledge of some of the planet's most dominant life forms, and take part in research projects with a global impact on this BSc Microbiology with Foundation course. The course has a strong practical basis, and students will learn a wide variety of techniques such as microbial genetics, biochemistry, and propagation.


Structure

The course is divided into four years:


  • Foundation year
  • Year 1
  • Year 2
  • Year 3

Compulsory Modules

  • Foundation Biology: Explore the life cycle of cells and the chemical reactions that give them energy and allow them to replicate.
  • Chemistry: Discover the chemical principles that provide the foundations for many scientific disciplines.
  • Mathematics Foundation: Gain the basic mathematical knowledge and skills required for a successful transition to degrees related to Chemical and Biological Sciences.
  • Foundation in Academic Skills: Develop academic skills essential for success both on the Foundation Year and as an undergraduate.

Optional Modules

  • Fundamentals of Evolution: Learn about the mechanisms of evolution, the diverse approaches for the study of genetic and phenotypic evolution.
  • History of Life on Earth: Gain an understanding of the development of life on our planet.
  • Human Pathology: Gain solid theoretical and practical knowledge and essential skills to understand the role of pathology in human disease diagnosis in biomedical research or healthcare.

Entry Requirements

  • A Level: BBB for applicants without Biology and a second science, CCC for applicants with Biology and a second science.
  • International Baccalaureate: 30 for applicants without higher level Biology and a second science, 24 for applicants with Biology and a second science, both at higher level.
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.
  • GCSE: Grade 4 (C) in Science if not studying sciences at A level.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5, with no component below 5.5.

Fees

  • New UK/Republic of Ireland students: 」9,790 for 2026/27 Foundation year, then rising to the standard course fees for the duration of your bachelor's level study.
  • New international students: 」23,000 for 2026/27 Foundation year, then rising to the standard course fees for the duration of your bachelor's level study.

Careers

BSc Microbiology graduates have a range of transferable skills that make them highly employable in both scientific and non-scientific job sectors. Graduates can become members of the Society of Biology and apply for Chartered Biologist status. The program has been accredited by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) following an independent and rigorous assessment.
