Program Overview


BSc Pharmaceutical Chemistry with Foundation

The BSc Pharmaceutical Chemistry with Foundation course offers a broad education in chemistry, providing students with the skills to succeed in a range of professions. This course is designed for students who are keen to take the BSc Pharmaceutical Chemistry course but haven't taken the necessary A-level subjects. The foundation year begins with a year of foundational study before leading directly into the three-year course.


Overview

Our new Pharmaceutical Chemistry degree has been developed together with our industrial partners to produce high-quality graduates for the pharmaceutical sector. The course goes beyond organic chemistry, covering many other areas of chemistry and biology, addressing the needs of the modern and growing industry. Students will develop a strong grounding in basic chemistry and biology, covering advanced topics relevant to modern pharmaceutical chemistry.


Structure

The course consists of four years of full-time study, including a foundation year. The foundation year includes compulsory modules in:


  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Academic Skills

The subsequent years include compulsory modules in:


  • Mathematics for Chemists
  • Chemistry Practicals 1
  • Fundamentals of Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
  • Shape, Structure and Reactivity in Organic Chemistry
  • Physical Processes and Molecular Organisation
  • Cell and Molecular Principles of Life

Entry Requirements

  • A Level: BBB for applicants without Chemistry, CCC for applicants with Chemistry
  • International Baccalaureate: 30 for applicants without Chemistry, 24 for applicants with Chemistry at higher level
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM
  • Extended Project Qualification: Recognized as part of a formal offer
  • GCSE: Grade 4 (C) in Science if not studying sciences at A level
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5, with no component below 5.5

Fees

  • New UK/Republic of Ireland students: 」9,790 for 2026/27 Foundation year, then rising to the standard course fees
  • New international students: 」23,000 for 2026/27 Foundation year, then rising to the standard course fees

This course has been developed in partnership with industry to provide good-quality graduates for the pharmaceutical sector. Graduates will have a range of skills essential for the pharmaceutical industry and a wide range of other careers. Past graduates have gone on to work for employers such as AstraZeneca, Campden BRI, Grant Thornton, Unilever, Deloitte, Pfizer, PwC, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Thames Water, FDM Group, and RSSL.
