Introduction to the Physician Associate Program
The Physician Associate program is designed to provide students with the training and skills necessary to become a fully qualified physician associate. This program is offered in partnership with local NHS groups in response to the growing demand for this professional role in the NHS.
Program Overview
Physician Associates are an invaluable part of the medical and wider multi-professional healthcare team, and practice under the supervision of a doctor to provide care for patients. The program provides intensive evidence-based academic knowledge coupled with hands-on workplace training.
Program Options
We offer two routes to becoming a qualified Physician Associate:
- MPAS Physician Associate Studies: a four-year integrated master's degree for undergraduate students
- MSc Physician Associate: a two-year program for postgraduate students
MPAS Physician Associate Studies
Our undergraduate integrated master's degree in Physician Associate Studies provides students with the training to become a fully qualified physician associate in four years. A foundation in medical science and core clinical skills is built into the studies from the start.
MSc Physician Associate
Our MSc Physician Associate program is an intensive two years of evidence-based teaching in dedicated state-of-the-art clinical teaching facilities. This is combined with hands-on workplace training in primary and secondary healthcare settings with our NHS partners.

Note on Program Changes
Following the Leng Review, the University is awaiting guidance from the General Medical Council and the government on the recommendations they wish to take forward. If any key changes are made to the program, they will be set out on the University's webpages, and all affected current and prospective students who have received an offer will be informed.
