Outreach

The Department of Chemistry offers outreach programs, including lectures for schools.

Lectures for Schools

The Lectures for Schools program enriches the topics covered in GCSE and A level chemistry. The department delivers a number of lectures for Year 11, 12, and 13 students, which expand on GCSE and A level chemistry topics. Each presentation lasts for 30-45 minutes and is delivered at school or college. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions, both about the talk content and about studying chemistry at university.

The 'Polymer Age'

Dr Adam Bromley discusses the advancement of human civilization in terms of the dominant material used, from the 'Stone Age' to what some now regard as the 'Polymer Age'. The lecture covers why polymeric materials are so useful, how modern polymer chemists control a seemingly uncontrollable cascade of reactions, and what new and exciting uses might be found for these materials.

Who is a Chemist and What Do They Do?

This lecture, also delivered by Dr Adam Bromley, explores the skills and opportunities chemistry graduates open themselves up to. It shines a light on the traditional and unexpected careers chemists end up in, both at the University of Reading and on the national level.
