Program Overview
Master of Engineering Management (MEM)
The Master of Engineering Management degree is housed in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Thomas Walter Center. This degree allows individuals working in engineering-related fields to expand their career potential and earn a degree that will benefit their future. The degree is the only one of its kind offered in Alabama and appeals to individuals working in various industries, including aerospace, biosystems, chemical, civil, computer science and software, electrical and computer, industrial and systems, materials, mechanical, and wireless.
About
This degree is targeted toward individuals working in an engineering discipline who want to pursue further education at their own convenience. The GRE is not required for eligible students who have earned a 2.75 GPA from an ABET-accredited engineering program. The courses, offered online, allow students to earn a well-rounded master's degree targeted toward specific options. Students who enroll can expect to graduate with a degree that meets their specific professional interest.
Program Options
This program has four options:
- Master of Engineering Management - Manufacturing Option
- Master of Engineering Management - Occupational Safety and Ergonomics Option
- Master of Engineering Management - Product Innovation Option
- Master of Engineering Management - Systems Option
Required Core Classes
There are five required courses common to all the options (core courses):
- INSY 6600 - Engineering-Economic Systems
- INSY 7970 - Special Topics OR INSY 6250 - Project Management
- INSY 6800 - Lean Systems
- INSY 7080 - Human Factors Engineering
- INSY 7760 - Engineering & Technology Management OR BUSI 7140
Required Courses by Option
There are two option-specific required courses in all the options in addition to the five core classes.
MEM-Manufacturing Option
- INSY 6330 - Six Sigma
- INSY 6840 - Control of the Manufacturing Floor and Processes
MEM-Occupational Safety and Ergonomics Option
- INSY 6010 - Safety Engineering I
- INSY 7060 - Ergonomics I
MEM-Production Innovation Option
- INSY 7730 - Product Design, Development and Test

Elective Options
There are three additional required INSY or INSY-related Electives for each option. An INSY Elective is any 3-hour graduate course with INSY prefix. An INSY-related Elective may have an INSY prefix or other prefix. Students can take all of their courses as INSY courses and are recommended to do so if they do not have an undergraduate degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering.
- INSY 7940 ISE Problems
- INSY 7980 ISE Project All graduate level courses are numbered 6000 and above. The courses numbered 8xxx are usually only taken by PhD students; individual instructors can make exceptions. Distance courses are delineated by the section number beginning with the letter D.
Program Structure
All of our required courses are offered at least once per year; most elective courses are offered less frequently. Generally, around five elective courses or more are offered each semester, including Summer. The courses in our program can be taken in any order, and prerequisites are generally not enforced at the Graduate level. Taking three courses (9 hours) is considered full-time for a Graduate student. Most online students take 1-2 courses per semester. Students have 6 years to complete the degree.
