Master of Building Construction Program

The Master of Building Construction program at Auburn University is a non-thesis based graduate program that requires a minimum of thirty-five credit hours to complete. Established in 1993, the program continues to grow and develop research opportunities, strong industry relations, and excellent academic content.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Master of Building Construction program is based on consideration of the applicant's proven ability to perform academic work at a superior level, leadership qualities, and overall accomplishments. The admission requirements include:

• Bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university
• A 3.0 GPA of the last two years of undergraduate education or a cumulative GPA of 2.75 is desired
• Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test, composed of verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections
• Acceptable letters of recommendation
• Official statement of financing (for international students only)

Admission Deadlines

• Non-Construction Undergraduates: Application Deadline is March 15, 2026, for Admission Summer 2026
• Construction Undergraduates: Application Deadline is March 15, 2026, for Admission Fall 2026
• International Students: Application Deadline is November 15, 2025, for Admission Summer 2026

Online Application Process

The online application process involves:

• Visiting the Graduate School website and clicking Apply
• Creating an account and logging in
• Completing several sections, including selecting the correct term and program option
• Requesting certified copies of transcripts from all previously attended educational institutions
• Requesting official copies of GRE scores
• Providing letters of recommendation
• Submitting a Statement of Purpose and current resume

Financial Sponsorship

The estimated tuition per semester (2023-2024) is $5,913 (9 or more credit hours) for in-state students and $15,993 (9 or more credit hours) for out-of-state and international students. In addition, students have to pay a $916 registration and service fee per semester.

Insurance

All international students are required to subscribe to Plan II of the student insurance plan or to provide evidence of equivalent coverage.

Capstone Projects

The purpose of the Capstone Project is to demonstrate the student's ability to independently explore a new topic, demonstrate appropriate application of the materials, and successfully communicate the information in a professional and academically rigorous format.

Professional Fees

The College of Architecture, Design and Construction charges a professional fee to partially defray the difference between state funding and tuition, and the actual costs of professional programs. The Master of Building Construction students pay a professional fee for two semesters.

Graduate Assistantships

The McWhorter School of Building Science offers several Graduate Teaching or Research Assistantships to graduate students with excellent academic and professional credentials. The awards are based collectively on the applicant's overall GPA, test scores, construction experience, and research or teaching expertise.

Length of Funding

Assistantships may be from one to four semesters in length but are typically offered for Fall and Spring semesters only.

Type of Funding

Auburn University provides full or partial tuition support to its graduate assistants.

Policies and Procedures

While employed by the McWhorter School of Building Science as a Graduate Teaching or Research Assistant, the student must follow the policies and procedures for Graduate Assistants as outlined in the Graduate Assistant Handbook.
