Program Overview

Introduction to the Aging Forward Program

The Auburn University College of Nursing is launching a new study abroad opportunity called Aging Forward, open to all Auburn undergraduate students and faculty. This immersive program offers participants a chance to explore the Netherlands' innovative approaches to aging, wellness, and community-based care.

Program Details

  • The program will take place from May 11-19, 2026.
  • Participants will visit the Hogeweyk Dementia Village, a first-of-its-kind residential community designed for individuals living with severe dementia.
  • The village includes homes, a pub, a theater, and other amenities, all staffed by professionals trained to provide holistic, person-centered care.
  • The program will allow undergraduate students and faculty from all disciplines to engage directly with Dutch health care leaders and explore how integrated, community-focused models can transform care for older adults.

Program Objectives

  • To understand the Netherlands' approach to aging, wellness, and community-based care.
  • To explore how different disciplines intersect with health professions to provide care.
  • To learn about primary care and prevention, plus holistic care in geriatric patients.

Program Structure

  • The program is embedded in the elective course NURS 4130: Wellness in Aging.
  • The course focuses on primary care and prevention, plus holistic care in geriatric patients.
  • Participants will take part in cultural excursions, such as a guided walking tour of Amsterdam, exploration of Amsterdam's canals, a visit to the Anne Frank House, and a trip to the scenic Dutch countryside.

Program Costs and Deadline

  • The cost for the trip is approximately $6,000.
  • The deadline to sign up is October 12.
  • Efforts are being made to pursue grants, scholarships, and philanthropic support to help make travel costs more accessible for students.
