Program Overview
Introduction to the Master of Public Health Program
The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree is designed to provide students with a broad preparation for professional practice in public health. The program is intended to satisfy the demand of local, regional, provincial, and federal health departments for trained public health professionals.
Admission Requirements
Admission requirements are those of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS).
Degree Requirements
The M.P.H. program requires the completion of:
- 21 credit hours of coursework
- A 3-credit hour field placement
- A 3-credit hour capstone research project
Expected Time to Graduate
The expected time to graduate is 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time.
Program Structure
The program is structured as follows:
Year 1
- GRAD 7300 Research Integrity Tutorial (0 credits)
- GRAD 7500 Academic Integrity Tutorial (0 credits)
- CHSC 7500 Core Concepts in Public Health (3 credits)
- CHSC 7502 Core Concepts in Public Health 2 (3 credits)
- CHSC 7520 Principles of Epidemiology (3 credits)
- CHSC 7860 Methods and Concepts for Community Health Sciences (3 credits)
- Select one of the following:
- CHSC 7300 Health Policy and Planning
- CHSC 7320 Organization and Financing of the Canadian Health Care System
- 9 credit hours of approved elective courses at the 7000 level offered by the College of Community and Global Health
Year 2
- GRAD 7000 Capstone Research Project (0 credits)
- Field Placement Continuation / Field Placement Defense (if not completed within Year 1)
- Research and write-up; Capstone Defense
Additional Requirements
- An undergraduate level course in Statistics is a pre-requisite for CHSC 7820. All students must have completed such a course at the time of admission, or will be required to take additional statistical training if they intend to complete CHSC 7820.
- On the recommendation of the student's advisor and with approval of the Director of the CHSC Graduate Program, elective courses for the M.P.H. program may be taken in other departments.
- Students may work on their field placement proposal while taking courses, however, the field placement defense can be held after CHSC 7500, CHSC 7502, CHSC 7520, and CHSC 7860 courses have successfully been completed.
- Field placement work / field placement defense continuation (if not completed within year 1), Research and write-up; Capstone Defense.
